Emperor Hadrian ordered the building's construction to start in 135 with the goal of using it as a mausoleum for himself and his family. After being completed in 139, it was converted into a military structure and eventually incorporated into the Aurelian Walls in 403.
When a massive plague outbreak ravaged the city in 590, Pope Gregory I saw Saint Michael the Archangel atop the castle, signaling the end of the outbreak. An angel statue is placed atop the building in remembrance of the apparition.
An 800-meter fortified corridor was constructed between the castle and Vatican City in 1277 so that the pope could flee if he was in danger. Pope Clement VII sought refuge in the fortress during the sieges of Rome in 1527.
A spiral ramp that leads to the chamber of ashes and then to the cells where several historical figures were imprisoned leads to the seven floors of the Castel Sant'Angelo.
In addition to the vast collection of weapons, moving toward the upper portion of the castle will reveal various rooms that served as the papal residence and are embellished with exquisitely preserved Renaissance frescoes.
Take breathtaking pictures of the city and enjoy a panoramic view from the castle's terrace to cap off the amazing experience.
